London Stock Exchange Lesson

October 8th, 2009 by Martin

I have to say that I am not surprised by news about London Stock Exchange. It is just an example of enterprise software status these days. It is shame that someone is promoting 100% availability. It is just not possible… 99,8% maybe but definitely not on top of MS SQL 2000. Small quiz: Why companies like Amazon or Google are not using Microsoft technologies? I think it is not a question of money for licenses ;).

Reason why I prefer Linux as my primary OS

May 3rd, 2009 by Martin

While  I am thinking about myself as OS agnostic person, I do have some preferences or opinions about what is an ideal OS form me. I switched my personal computer to Linux a few years ago, but my workstation OS was usually chosen by my employer IT department. To be honest I did not try Vista, I was happy with XP and this was true even after a lot of my colleagues moved to Vista (and back  to XP again). For software developer there are more essential things than Aero or new security model. Developer needs to write code, compile and debug. I have to say that best development experience on Microsoft platform was with combination of Visual Studio 2008 and Windows XP.

March 21st, 2009 by Martin

Sometimes things goes wrong and you do not know what to do. Your Visual Studio is not loading or failing loading some components. It happened to me many times and there was always some trick how to fix it. If you are experiencing problems, probably due to some Visual Studio dependency like template or component, that is displayed on your designer toolbox, there is simple hack how repair it. Just run Visual Studio from command prompt with following arguments:

devenv /resetskippkgs

Death of Linq to SQL

October 31st, 2008 by Martin

Well, I have to say that I was not a fan of Linq2SQL, I did not quite get an idea what is Microsoft going to do with. From this article I came to conclusion, that only Entity Framework will be developed and used as Microsoft’s default data access solution.  Or maybe they will drop Entity Framework for NHibernate or object databases in some time. ;)

Most wanted VS.NET feature

October 1st, 2008 by Martin

I am long term Microsoft Visual Studio user (not only of course ;)). I used more than six versions in my professional history. This week I read an article about new Visual Studio 2010. It was full of new features like more support for testing, Agile and… Well I have to say that I am a bit sad about all that new features. My personal most wanted feature from VS.NET is speed, responsiveness and extendability. Unfortunately none of them is on a road map. Just bloating…

Debugging .NET Framework

January 17th, 2008 by Martin

I wrote a post about this great news for all .NET/Mono developers. Today I came across Shawn Burke’s post about how to configure Visual Studio 2008 to use these symbols. I gave it a try and it works nicely. Great post!

Microsoft Live Labs announced a new project – Volta

December 6th, 2007 by Martin

Volta is Microsoft’s attempt to create toolkit for creating multi-tier web applications. It should be declarative and ease web developer’s life by adding more abstraction to development. I have to say that I am a bit confused by many MS projects that are web related (like AJAX, Silverlight and now Volta). I am going to take a deeper look into it and hopefully will write some finding here.
