Strange blank screen issue with WordPress

February 16th, 2007 by Martin

I had quite anoing issue with WordPress. It started around version 2.0, but not sure about. I came across these problems on multiple installations and hosting providers. Basicly I got two problems:

1) After saving a post/page my post.php displayed blank screen. It was not blocking issue, but quite anoing.

2) Second problem was duplicating of drafts after saving. Draft was saved in 6 copies of itself!

Both these issues combined make me little bit crazy,  but I got a lot of other things to solve. I did some dirty hacks to work around it, but I finally had time to search for some ultime solution. It took me only couple of minutes and I found a thread about same problems. If you do not want to read all comments for other symptoms, just take a look at my last comment.

Finally all my WordPress plugins are 2.1 ready

February 13th, 2007 by Martin

Yes, it took some time, but I just finished new version of my WP-Custom Logo plugin, that is WordPress 2.1 ready. All other plugins worked just fine, but because of changes in the way WP 2.1 login screen I had to made couple of changes to get it work nicely ;) . I had to replace original login screen background, with my custom, because there was WP logo with shadow an light effect on it, so you must play little bit with your custom logo image to cover default logo… Enough words. It is done… Hapy using :) .

Playing with Python

February 7th, 2007 by Martin

Well, I do not why so late, but I started to have feeling that there is something strange with PHP these days (especialy release 5.2). And I decided to take a look at other scripting languages. I had some previous experiences with languages like Perl and Ruby, but not Python (except a basic syntax knowledge from modifying Planet etc)… I did some research on current state of two languages – Python and Ruby. My usual needs for programming language are as follows:

  • Design of language
  • Performance
  • Productivity
  • Comunity/Support

Fist I took a look at Ruby, because I had a previous experience from my work (we used Ruby for generation of Java SWT forms source code, because there was not any good IDE for it). Ruby is really beutiful language but I ended up with performance. It really needs some tunning of Ruby implementation using byte code precomplation :( . But language itself is cool. I will give it a try later, because through that I am not fully performance guy, it was really much slower than Java or Python.

So… Yes I decided to try Python. Holy grail! Throught I am now at the stage of exploring and playing, I have to say that from performance point of view Python is much faster than Ruby… Conclusion for me is that I will continue playing with Python with an eye on Ruby implementation and its performance.

WordPress 2.1 Ella

February 3rd, 2007 by Martin

Ok, I know that there was a lot of activity around WordPress last couple of weeks, a lot of upgrades, but new Version (cappital V has its meaning here) – WordPress 2.1 Ella named by greatest jazz vocalist Ella Fitzgerald. There are a lot of new features and nearly 550 bug fixes. Complete list of changes can be found here and I think it is really cool :) Now we came to a little bit tricky part – upgrading. I have to say that I had really seamless ugrade, without any troubles, only a few plugins had some minor issues. Throught this I strongly encourage you to backup both database and your prevous WP instalation before upgrading!

Happy WordPressing :)
